Responsibilities:
As a member of the Technical Services team, this
position provides systems support for the high performance
supercomputers and visualization computers of the Arctic Region
Supercomputing Center, including operating system, network, storage
management and third party software installation, maintenance,
upgrades and troubleshooting. It also includes use of technical
expertise to ensure operational availability and effective use of
the supercomputers at the Center.
Major Duties:
- Perform day to day system status review and troubleshooting,
and work with vendors as necessary, to ensure fully functioning
high availability supercomputing systems and infrastructure.
- Provide oncall support in rotation with other staff to resolve
system problems after hours.
- Ensure that information and network systems are operated,
managed, secured and used in accordance with local security
policies and procedures and Department of Defense
requirements.
- Install, inventory, modify, maintain, test and integrate system
software to provide access to instructional and research
applications systems and software tools with minimal negative
impact to users.
- Research and develop tools for the collection and analysis of
performance data to examine andtune the systems and give profiles
of system utilization and performance and make recommendations to
management concerning future computing requirements.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation for software and
utilities and operational procedures for locally developed systems,
local customizations and local procedures.
- Provide technical and consulting support, and vendor interface,
for other staff and users.
- Be cognizant of and promote technological advances relating to
the use the ARSC high performance computing resources.
- Perform analysis, develop and modify software and systems using
software engineering practices to circumvent problems and enhance
computing environment.
- Lead systems projects involving other team members, provide
technical expertise for, and coordinate with, other ARSC staff to
perform system upgrades and installations.
Education and Experience Required:
- M.S. in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent
relevant experience.
- Position will require access to machines processing sensitive
data. Employee will be required to apply for National Agency Check
(NAC) as required by ARSC's Department of Defense sponsor.
- Experience in systems software implementation and maintenance
management or leading operating system upgrades.
- Demonstrated proficiency in usage and support of high
performance computing systems.
- Extensive experience in leading system installations and
upgrades, storage management solutions, information or network
security.
- Excellent communication skills and experience in writing
documentation for internal users.
- Interpersonal and communications skills to provide technical
and consulting support with internal and external staff and
users.
- Ability to plan, present scope and impacts for, and lead large
projects.
- Demonstrated proficiency in usage and support of some of the
following in a production environment:
- High performance computing systems.
- Operating system for clusters or mpp systems.
- Workstation tools and network access between workstations and
supercomputers, e.g. SGI or Sun workstations, PCs, Macintoshes,
XWindow applications, distributed processing.
- Debugging problems related to various network protocols such as
TCP/IP, SNMP, NFS, DFS, NIS, ethernet, Gigabit ethernet, FDDI,
HiPPI.
- StorageTek robotic tape silos (or similar equipment).
- Programming in C or C++.
- Programming in Fortran or Fortran 90.
- Accounting software and performance tools on large Unix
systems.
- Resource measurement, tuning, reporting; capacity
planning.
