IBM offers a wide set of solutions for scientific, technical, and commercial users who require supercomputing levels of performance.

IBM's supercomputing solutions span several platforms, from the S/390 ES/9000 with Vector Facilities, the POWER Visualization System, the RISC System/6000, and the recently introduced Scalable POWERparallel Systems.

The SP Scalable POWERparallel System provides our customers with the broadest range of application availability and compatible solutions "from Palmtops to TeraFLOPS". The Scalable POWERparallel system is a natural extension of the RISC System/6000 workstation product line, providing binary compatibility for almost all existing serial applications, as well as graceful entry into the world of scalable parallel computing. POWERparallel Systems, scale from 8 RISC POWER Processors nodes up to 64 nodes. Each node may contain 64 to 256 MB of memory; 1 to 2 GB of disk; as well as support for industry standard interconnect such as Ethernet and FDDI. In addition high speed connectivity between IBM S/390s and the SP may be achieved via BMCA - direct channel attach. The system delivers between 1 and 8 GF of peak performance.

Key to achieving high-performance, scalability, and efficient parallel programs on the SP is the High Performance Switch, which delivers high reliability, uniform low latency, and scalable high bandwidth interconnect between the supercomputing nodes of an SP system.

Essential to removing the barriers which have limited the acceptance of scalable parallel systems in the marketplace is software: tools, libraries, enablers, and applications which either remove or ease the burden of parallel programming. To that end IBM has introduced an innovative Parallel Programming Environment, Systems Management and Monitoring Suite, and highly functional Job Scheduling software. In addition, highly tuned technical libraries such as OSL for linear programming and ESSL for high performance linear algebra have been made available for the SP. Lastly, IBM is assertively working with Independent Software Vendors to insure a wide and comprehensive software application solution base for both our technical and commercial user' needs.

The ES/3090 and ES/9000 with Vector Facilities offer customers outstanding performance in batch processing. Scalable to a capacity of up to 6 Vector Facilities, the IBM vector solution offers a performance range up to 2.5 GFLOPS, 7 GB/second of system throughput, and disk capacity of over 100 terabytes. Memory capacity reaches 9 GB.

IBM also offers its customers a supercomputing visualization solution, the POWER Visualization System, which links 8 to 32 processors in parallel to provide a peak rating of 1,280 double-precision megaFLOPS, and 2.5 GB of system memory. The integrated HIPPI I/O controller can access hundreds of gigabytes of RAID storage at up to 100 MB/sec. It offers 24-bit true-color images and animation capabilities with variable resolutions up to 1,920 x 1,536 pixels. Its parallel architecture, coupled with its high-data bandwidths, extends the scope of scientific visualization applications, as well as opening up new vistas in image synthesis and animation. IBM's Visualization Data Explorer, an extensible visualization environment, provides an easy to use interface for visual programming and computation on the POWER Visualization System, the RISC System/6000 Family, the SP Scalable POWERparallel System, as well as UNIX workstations typically found in our customers' heterogeneous UNIX environments.

In addition to its leading-edge hardware offerings, IBM and its business partners offer application solutions and consulting expertise in the disciplines of chemical sciences, engineering analysis, electronic analysis, mathematical sciences, petroleum E&P, physical sciences, and environmental science.
