SAN DIEGO — October 16, 2008 — A recent survey of HPC users worldwide conducted by Tabor Research concluded that on average, users expect to increase their overall spending on HPC products and services in 2009 and 2010. The second annual “HPC Budget Map Survey” conducted by Tabor Research covered 92 users worldwide with a range of budgets and found that over two thirds of survey respondents were expecting increases in their HPC budgets over the next two years.
Of those anticipating a spending increase:
over two thirds expect their total spending to increase by at least 10%, nearly half expect spending to increase by over 20%, and less than one in eight users expect a decrease in HPC spending.
“The health of the HPC industry is strong and appears to be getting stronger,” said Addison Snell, Vice President and General Manager of Tabor Research. “We believe that the HPC market will grow to be about a $27.2 billion market by 2012, adding about $8.5 billion since we first measured the size of the market at $18.6 billion in 2007. During this period, we expect HPC to show some immunity to global budget cuts because of its relationship to strategic R&D.”
According to Tabor Research, servers count for approximately 42% of the total HPC market (about $7.9 billion), but servers will grow more slowly than other major segments in the HPC space. Combined, the software, storage, and services segments account for about 46% of the market and are all expected to outperform the market during the forecast period.
“We expect to see storage leading the market in growth rate based on the explosive growth of data generation capabilities,” said Snell. “We also see increased demand for software and services driven by greater use of HPC methods within industrial sites.”
About the HPC Budget Map Survey
Tabor Research surveys HPC sites on the distribution of their total HPC budgets. The questionnaire asks respondents how their current HPC budgets are divided, on a percentage basis, among various categories: hardware, software, facilities, staff, services, utility computing, and other. Respondents are then asked to further divide each category into sub-segments (for example, how the software budget is allocated among system software, middleware, tools, storage management, third-party applications, and in-house transfer costs). The survey concludes with questions on user site demographics, total budget size, and projected growth. The surveys were completed in September 2008, after the start of the U.S. credit crisis. In a separate research project, additional surveys completed in one local market in the first half of October have been consistent with these findings.
