IDC SAYS HPC $6B+ HEALTHY AND GROWING

BUSH REQUESTS $131.9 BILLION IN 2005 R&D FUNDING
- The Bush Administration requested $131.9 billion in federal research
and development (R&D) funding for FY2005. This is $5.9 billion above
the estimated $126 billion that was appropriated for federal R&D in
FY2004.

RTI USES HPC TO SIMULATE AVIAN FLU OUTBREAK
- In the first use of a new infectious disease modeling system consortium
funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health, researchers at
Research Triangle Institute International are hosting an exercise to
test public health responses to an outbreak of avian flu in a simulated
community of 500,000 residents.

CFS ANNOUNCES SUCCESS FOR LUSTRE FILE SYSTEM ON HP SFS
- Cluster File Systems, Inc., a leader in high-performance parallel
file systems, announced that its Lustre technology has been integrated
in the HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share product (HP SFS).

MICROWAY ANNOUNCES MPI LINK-CHECKER FOR MPI BASED CLUSTERS
- Microway, a leading provider of HPC solutions, announced the
availability of the commercial version of MPI Link-Checker, a software
diagnostic that finds underperforming nodes in MPI based clusters.

NORWAY'S FIRST TERAFLOP CLUSTER INSTALLED AT U OF TROMSO
- Earlier this month, Norway's first 64-bit Teraflop cluster was
installed at the University of Tromso. In less than 4 hours, the HPC-
group at UiT had upgraded the system from 100 Gigaflop to 1 Teraflop,
all while being broadcast across the Internet.

SGI ONYX4 VISUALIZATION HELPS CREATE HUMAN FACE SIMULATION
- Using a Silicon Graphics Onyx4 UltimateVision system, Canadian
scientists are in the process of creating the first research-quality
simulated human face, whose features can be controlled by a mouse right
down to a Mona Lisa smile.

CRAY REPORTS $8M INT'L ORDER FOR X1E, XD1 SUPERCOMPUTERS
- Cray Inc. reported an order valued at approximately $8 million from an
unnamed international customer for a Cray X1E supercomputer and a Cray
XD1 supercomputer. The two systems are scheduled to be installed in the
first half of 2005.

TOYOTA ACCELERATES FORMULA ONE CAR DEVELOPMENT WITH INTEL
- Intel has announced that Toyota Motorsport, a major Formula One racing
team, has standardized its car design and engineering systems on a
cluster of Intel Itanium 2 processor-based servers to enhance racing
performance and reduce the time required to develop its Formula One
cars.

PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN EXTENDS USAGE OF MSC.Nastran
- MSC.Software Corp. announced that the second largest European car
maker, France-based PSA PEUGEOT CITROEN, has extended the exclusive
usage of MSC.Nastran for all its linear structural simulations and will
purchase the new MSC.Nastran Implicit Nonlinear solution (Sol 600).
