A team at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has become the first international team to conduct a performance evaluation study of the 5,120-processor Earth Simulator. The team's paper was accepted for the SC2004 conference, then nominated for Best Paper.

Z's $61.7M REFURBISHMENT TO ADVANCE MACHINE'S CAPABILITIES
Sandia National Laboratories' Z machine has received approval from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to proceed with a $61.7 million refurbishment. The project is called ZR, for Z-Refurbishment.

VA TECH'S SYSTEM X REBUILT -- ACHIEVES 12.25 TERAFLOPS
Virginia Tech announced that the rebuilt System X, its supercomputer cluster now built from 1,100 Xserve G5s, is now operating at 12.25 teraflops, an increase of nearly 2 teraflops over the previous official record of 10.28 teraflops.

SDSC RELEASES ROCKS 3.3.0, SUPPORTS NACONA, INFINIBAND
Researchers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and their collaborators have released version 3.3.0 of the Rocks Clustering Distribution.

VOLTAIRE, RLX DELIVER 10 Gbps SERVER SOLUTIONS FOR CLUSTERS
RLX Technologies and Voltaire announced that the companies are collaborating to deliver the industry's first 10 Gbps (4X) InfiniBand integrated switch for blade servers.
