HEC ANALYSIS: WHO NEEDS HIGH-BANDWIDTH APPLICATIONS?
- Commentary from the High-End Crusader
The High-End Crusader places new, high-bandwidth applications firmly in
the mainstream of Grand Challenge computational science. Fully implicit
methods, monolithic databases, and adaptive mesh refinement are prime
components. Subdomain-based preconditioners for iterative linear
solvers can bridge the gap between global domains of influence and
distributed memory but are only really applicable to some problems.
-
MASSIVE SUPERCOMPUTER IS NEEDED FOR NEW MOON, MARS MISSIONS
- Leading technology analyst firm IDC said a pioneering, government-
funded "Mars Simulator" supercomputer would maximize the chances for
success and minimize the cost of President Bush's proposed manned
missions to the moon and Mars.
-
MAPPING THE EVOLUTION OF A VIRUS
- A University of California scientist, with collaborators from the
University of Cambridge (England) and the World Health Organization
National Influenza Center at Erasmus Medical Center, have developed a
computer modeling method for mapping the evolution of the influenza
virus.
-
SEARCHING FOR A POLLUTION SOLUTION
- by Trish Barker
Coal-burning power plants spew toxic mercury into the atmosphere, but a
researcher at the University of Arizona is using NCSA's two-teraflop
IBM p690 cluster to better understand mercury reactions and develop
effective emission controls.
