LAWMAKERS CALL FOR INCREASED HPC FUNDING
- The House Appropriations Committee has expressed its disappointment
with the High-End Computing Revitalization Task Force's failure to
acquire increased funds for scientific computing in 2005.

A NEW TWIST ON FIBER OPTICS
- By twisting fiber optic strands into helical shapes, researchers have
created unique structures that can precisely filter, polarize or
scatter light. Compatible with standard fiber optic lines, these hair-
like structures may replace bulky components in sensors, gyroscopes and
other devices.

DELL, OTHERS PROVIDE STATOIL W/ HPCC FOR SEISMIC DATA MINING
- Leading Norwegian oil company, Statoil, has selected Dell and Scali to
deliver a standards-based, high-performance computing cluster (HPCC)
based on Intel architecture to process seismic data in the company's
search for new petroleum resources.

NSI EXPANDS PRODUCT FAMILY WITH GeoCluster PLUS
- NSI Software Inc. announced the availability of GeoCluster Plus, which
extends the high availability of business-critical applications and
data on Microsoft Cluster Service (MSCS) while also allowing for the
remote replication of clustered data for disaster recovery purposes.

SHAHIN KHAN LEAVES SUN, HPTC RE-ORGS
- Shahin Khan, the recently appointed VP, High Performance Technical
Computing and long time industry veteran has left Sun. Last week, Kahn
and 8 other department members either left the company entirely or were
reassigned to other departments within Sun.

IBM'S DAVID TUREK TESTIFIES BEFORE CONGRESS
- IBM's Vice President of Deep Computing, David Turek, testified before
the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources on June 22,
2004. Turek spoke about the national importance of supercomputing, as
Congress explores HR 4218.

HP, SIMDESK TO HELP INDIANA EMBRACE TECH INCLUSION PROGRAM
- HP and SimDesk Technologies announced an alliance agreement to aid the
State of Indiana in its statewide digital inclusion program. Under
terms of the agreement, HP NonStop servers will be used as the server-
computing platform for SimDesk applications.
