ANALYSIS & COMMENTARY

LEARNING CURVES AND RETURNS ON INVESTMENT
by Ed Colet, Virtual Gold, Inc

Ed Colet is the Acting Director of Research at Virtual Gold Inc., responsible for developing analytical methods for data mining and for investigating human factors and usability issues of business intelligence systems. At present, he is in the final stage of completing a doctoral dissertation in the Cognition and Perception program at New York University's Department of Psychology. Ed has also worked for IBM Research at the T.J. Watson Research Center. At IBM, Ed was a member of the group that developed Advanced Scout, the data mining application for NBA teams. His research interests focus on statistical methods and human factors.

Colet observes: "Data mining is a new and emerging technology that has been applied to a wide variety of domains. An important issue is to understand the effect that the introduction of new data mining technology can have on an organization. As providers and users of new technology we all hope that ultimately benefits accrue and we reap a healthy return on investment (ROI). Generally speaking, the benefits over time of the introduction of new technology most likely will follow a characteristic curve. Specifically speaking, understanding the nature of this curve has implications for how and when to evaluate ROI."

THE DATA WAREHOUSE VS THE PATTERN WAREHOUSE: PART I
by Kamran Parsaye, Information Discovery, Inc

Kamran Parsaye, PhD, is CEO of Information Discovery, Inc. He is one of the original developers of the concept of "data mining", having developed commercial programs for this purpose in the mid 1980's. He originated the concept of an "intelligent database", and is the author of "Intelligent Database Tools & Applications" published by John Wiley. Dr. Parsaye has a wide range of experience in the software industry, both as a research scientist and as a high-technology business leader, having provided guidance and direction to top level management of leading industrial and financial organizations, as well as key government entities such as the US AirForce. He received his BS and MS degrees in Mathematics from King's College, London, and his PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Los Angeles. His books on databases are used in universities world-wide.

Dr. Parsaye writes: "The concept of a data warehouse was championed in the 1980’s as a repository for corporate data elements. The idea was to create a central storage facility where everyone in the corporation could go and get "data" on demand, whenever they needed it. And the central repository would help increase corporate data quality and consistency because everyone obtained data from a single source. This idea has now achieved worldwide acceptance, and almost every Fortune 500 company has several datawarehouse projects."
