MEASURING THE EFFECTS OF INTERNET ADVERTISING: PART I
by Larry Coleman
This week, executive editor at large Inderpal Bhandari presents a guest editorial by Mr. Larry Coleman. Prior to joining Virtual Gold, Inc. as its Director of New Media Solutions, Coleman was President of Prospect Network, an Internet database marketing company that created a significant new kind of advertising and messaging inventory distributed exclusively through a network of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). In the last nine years, he has established a reputation as an industry leader in the effective application of marketing and advertising using new media platforms including interactive television and the Internet. In addition to Prospect Network, he has led pioneering advertising product development and marketing teams at and at Bell Atlantic/TELE-TV, where he was Vice President of Product and Business Development, Marketing/Advertising Applications and at EON (formerly TV Answer). He has nearly eighteen years experience in database marketing, including three years as founder of a successful direct marketing start-up. He has held senior business development management positions with Specialty Direct Marketing and Communicolor (a division of Standard Register Corporation). Coleman holds degrees from the University of Dayton and St. John's University.
THE DATABASE MARKET GOES VERTICAL
by John McCormick, Analyst, Frost & Sullivan
Frost & Sullivan was founded in 1961 in New York City with a specific mission: Provide world-class market consulting on emerging high-technology and industrial markets. The company soon developed a reputation as one of the world's leading companies in market consulting and corporate training. Now well into its fourth decade, Frost & Sullivan has won a worldwide reputation for high-quality market consulting and training in more than 20 major industries.
McCormick writes: "The management of information has always been a challenge to businesses of all sizes, which is why the database management systems (DBMS) market has become such a major market. The list of vendors reads like a 'Who's Who' of software companies: Oracle, IBM, Microsoft, the list continues. Since their inception, client/server-based DBMS have grown rapidly, reaching $3.66 billion in 1997 for the U.S. market alone. However, 1997 was as hard on DBMS vendors as El Nino was on the West Coast. Growth rates for the world market dipped to single digits, Informix reported staggering losses, and even the stalwart Oracle failed to meet analysts' expectations. But before you write off the DBMS market to flood damage, take a closer look."
