IBM DATA MINING: AN INTERVIEW WITH DAVID MARTIN
by Alan Beck, editor in chief
David C. Martin is Development Manager for IBM's net.Mining Solutions group, which produces focused machine learning and data mining for intranet and Internet applications. The net.Mining Solutions group is part of IBM's Global Business Intelligence Solutions unit. Martin was also an IT Specialist for IBM.
Prior to joining IBM, Martin worked for numerous academic and commercial organizations in the areas of knowledge management, databases and operating systems. Most recently, he was Assistant Director for Innovative Software Systems at the University of California San Francisco, where, among other responsibilities, he developed and managed the Gallen II project, a World Wide Web-based client-server digital library system for accessing published literature, on-line public access catalogs and scientific databases. He has written and presented several papers on this subject. Martin has also worked for Sun Microsystems, Molecular Simulation, Inc. and Innovision Corporation.
Martin is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery, IEEE Computer Society, USENIX Association and Internet Society. He observes: "It is vital to look at _all_ the methods and means by which a company interacts with its customers, whether that's through warranty cards, inbound/outbound call centers, the Internet, face-to-face meetings etc., as a component of a multichannel customer relationship management solution. Information collected, analyses produced, and results of various campaigns can be leveraged throughout the organization regardless of where information originally comes from or for what purpose an analysis was done.

Aaron Zornes, strategic chairman of the recent DCI Data Warehouse Conference and Exposition in Phoenix, Arizona and executive vice president and service director for Application Delivery Strategies at META Group offers a point-by-point review of the convo plus a detailed assessment of the state of the industry.
He observes: "Overall the market for data warehouse (DW) software, hardware and services will continue to grow at 40% annual compound rate through 1998 -- from US$2.8B in 1996 to US$8B in 1998 (First Albany Corp./META Group estimates). From an architectural standpoint, we are seeing continued rapid growth in data marts -- growing from 51% of all DW architectures to 61% during 1997 (vs. 24% of all DWs during 1996). Operational data store is holding steady at 23-24% while centralized/enterprise DW is declining from 43% of current to 19% planned. Moreover, personal/mobile OLAP cubes will grow from 8% to over 21% of DWs planned."
