StorCloud TO BUILD UPON HIGH BANDWIDTH SAN INITIATIVE AT SC05

StorCloud looks to build upon its success at SC2004 with more challenging goals for SC05 in Seattle.

At SC2004, teams of high performance computing experts demonstrated diverse high performance computing applications using the onsite StorCloud storage infrastructure.

Four SC2004 Challenge Awards Were Given:

  • Best Random Access Use of StorCloud: Blockbuster, Lawrence Livermore National Labs.

  • Best Use of StorCloud to Advance a Scientific Application: MPQC, Sandia National Labs.

  • Most Innovative Use of StorCloud: PNNL Active Storage, Pacific Northwest National Labs.

  • Highest Achieved StorCloud Bandwidth and I/Os per second: Enzo, San Diego Supercomputing Center.

SC2004 StorCloud showcased HPC storage technologies (topologies, devices, interconnects) comprising of state-of-the-art heterogeneous devices and technology to build a virtual on-site "storage on request" area network capability to support researchers and demonstrate high bandwidth applications at the conference.

For SC2004, StorCloud Showcased:

  • Evolutionary and revolutionary HPC storage technologies in a heterogeneous environment.

  • Provided about 850TB of randomly accessible storage to SC2004 participants.

  • Provided about 2.3 Tb per second infrastructure bandwidth.

  • Challenge Applications that stretched StorCloud to its limits

  • Six non-challenge applications exercising addtitional dimensions of storage

Storage, file system and software vendors contributed equipment and expertise to the initiative for the duration of SC2004. The storage equipment were attached and assigned to host platforms throughout the convention on an as requested basis. Host platforms were partitioned, formatted, and used the storage as needed. Sharing devices will also be accommodated between cooperating parties. StorCloud was architected and deployed entirely by volunteers from government, industry and academia.
