Features - Enterprise Data Insights:CASSINI PROBE DATA RESIDES ON NetApp SYSTEMSNetwork Appliance Inc announced that the Cassini probe data coming from Saturn back to Earth is being stored on NetApp storage systems. NASA; the European Space Agency (ESA); and the Italian space agency, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI), jointly sponsored the Cassini probe mission to orbit Saturn and study the Saturnian system in detail over a four-year period. Vast amounts of critical science data from the mission are sent to Earth from Cassini every day. That data is collected, managed and made available around the world for scientific usage at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. From mission design software simulations to launch command operations as well as data capture and telemetry for information coming from Saturn, NetApp FAS and NearStore are the storage platforms for the Cassini mission as well as the mission's IT support functions. "NetApp is proud to be the storage repository for one of the most ambitious scientific explorations in history," said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Marketing at Network Appliance. "We have been a storage partner to JPL for many years, and our systems power not only Cassini, but also the Deep Space Network and Earth Orbital systems programs, managing and backing up terabytes of information from satellites around the world. The wealth of data coming from Saturn demands a high-performance, high-capacity, high-uptime storage solution. In collaboration with our channel partner, Insight Investments, NetApp is pleased to offer that solution and contribute to uncovering the mysteries and beauties of our solar system."
