FIFTH-GEN. LSI LOGIC EXPANDER IC LEADS ENTRY INTO SAS MKT

Customers and OEMs will see the first fully-functional Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) expander silicon in LSI Logic product demonstrations this week at the Computex tradeshow. The LSI Logic SASx12 expander builds on five-generations of development expertise and industry-recognized SAS expander technology standards leadership.

"Our engineering team and validation lab stands apart in its ability to debug and bring to market a reliable, feature-rich SAS expander solution. Wide port capability, mixed SAS/SATA and cascaded topologies are very complex features to reliably design," said Dan Roehrich, director of hardware development for LSI Logic Storage Standard Products. "The lessons we've learned over five generations of expander development and through our leadership role in writing the SAS expander standards, enable us to efficiently detect and solve problems that would otherwise significantly impact our customers. When it comes to expanders, no one in the world matches LSI Logic's experience."

LSI Logic provides a full family of SAS products, including the SAS1064 controller, SAS3040X host bus adapter and a family of MegaRAID SAS storage cards. Showcased will be the first, fully-functional SAS RAID adapter card and a SASx12 expander IC in configurations now available and actively being demonstrated to OEMs worldwide. Fibre Channel products and the MyStorage management software will also be shown in the LSI Logic suite.

The SAS RAID adapter product family will feature LSI Logic's MegaRAID technology products, utilizing Intel XScale technology based processors (code name Dobson) and the LSI Logic SAS1064 controller IC, aimed at supporting OEMs and the channel in enterprise and low to midrange server markets. LSI Logic is delivering products to OEMs worldwide to advance development of next-generation SCSI interface devices.

Boasting features that liberate SCSI from its parallel predecessor, and providing SATA compatibility, SAS delivers new levels of breakthrough speed and connectivity while retaining the functionality and reliability. SAS technology uses the proven SCSI command set and leverages a common electrical and physical connection interface compatible with SATA devices.
