Features - Storage Innovations:EMC INTRODUCES LOW-COST NAS GATEWAY FOR WINDOWS ENVIRONMENTSEMC Corp extended its NetWin family of network attached storage (NAS) products with a low-cost model targeted at the entry-level NAS market. The Microsoft Windows-based NetWin 110 has a starting list price of $6,100. It will be sold exclusively through authorized EMC distributors including Arrow Electronics, Avnet Hall-Mark and Tech Data, three of the world's largest computer products distributors and service providers. The new EMC NetWin 110 NAS Gateway, based on the Microsoft Windows Storage Server 2003 platform, is a cost-effective solution for customers looking to implement NAS for the first time or expand the capabilities of a storage area network by enabling it to perform NAS functions as well. The EMC NetWin 110 with CLARiiON storage delivers scalable performance and increased data availability versus similar competitive offerings. Featuring simple installation and manageability, it will be made available in both direct-attached and gateway configurations. Trial copies of LEGATO data protection software are also included. Customers now have the choice of EMC quality and reliability in departmental, remote and small office deployments, with improved availability, higher utilization and simplified management for File, Print and Microsoft Exchange consolidations. Steve Spieler, systems engineer at Wells' Dairy, said, "The EMC NetWin will allow us to consolidate old servers and move to a new, more cost- effective and high-function platform. We looked at products from Network Appliance but needed a solution that fit seamlessly into our Microsoft Windows environment. Using LEGATO RepliStor to seamlessly replicate data between NetWins, we are able to deliver a higher service level to our users and be confident that the system will always be available." Wells' Dairy Inc, the world's largest family-owned and managed dairy processor, is the world's largest manufacturer of ice cream in one location, where it produces BLUE BUNNY branded items distributed across the nation and in many foreign countries including some of the world's largest retailers. "Companies today are challenged by growing data and require innovative and complete storage solutions to meet their replication and consolidation needs," said Yuval Neeman, corporate vice president at Microsoft Corp. "The Windows Storage Server 2003-based EMC NetWin 110 incorporates rich, industry-leading storage features like Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and Virtual Disk Service (VDS) that enable customers to have optimal storage solutions at a low TCO." David Donatelli, EMC executive vice president of storage platforms operations, said, "Customers have told us they prefer Microsoft-based NAS solutions for entry-level requirements. The NetWin family now delivers the best of both worlds: industry-standard Microsoft Windows coupled with EMC's storage expertise. Customers of all sizes have realized that islands of non-networked storage can be cost-effectively consolidated. EMC's new NetWin 110 Gateway is the most economical way for them to get control of all of their information and get the largest return on their existing storage investment."
