JOURNEY TO THE INTERNET'S UNKNOWN REGIONS
You heard it a couple of years ago: The World Wide Web is far deeper and more vast than previously imagined. That is terrific news. But where are all those fascinating, hidden pockets of information that are supposedly out there, and why can't we find them on Yahoo?

ENTERPRISE INFORMATION INTEGRATION
Enterprises of all descriptions have long sought to integrate and manage all of their information assets within a single system. The goal remains elusive because enterprises create and store their assets in a myriad of disparate systems -- relational databases, mainframes, different operating systems, free text, hierarchical repositories, and so on. BI INTEGRATION: EXTENDING THE "INFORMATION NET"
by Jim Kanzler, president & CEO, Meta5 Inc
Perhaps the best way to understand the new concept of Business Intelligence Integration (BII) is to equate it to fishing. Imagine a commercial fishing boat out on the sea. A recent study co-authored by two researchers in Penn State's Smeal College of Business provides information gatekeepers on the Internet and World Wide Web with insights into developing paid placement strategies, such as a fee for preferential placement in the database, an increased relevance score in response to a query, featured listings on the results page or some other form of prominent display.

DIGITAL DATA BECOMES CRIME-FIGHTING TOOL
You're mugged at your neighborhood ATM by a masked gunman who knocks you unconscious. The only thing the bank camera captures is a picture of his forearm. Should you kiss goodbye any chance of an arrest -- as well as your cash?
TECHNOLOGY HELPS STATES SNIFF OUT MISSING TAXES
Delinquent taxpayers beware -- if your local tax collector doesn't get you, a new computer system will. U.S. states are using computers and information technology to increase revenue and fee collection, showing the traditional tax man how to do a better job.
