WHEN ELEPHANTS LEARN TO ROCK AND ROLL

The war in Afghanistan and the Enron scandal overshadowed Kmart declaring Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. How did such a prominent retail chain fail? Retail is a difficult industry. Peruse any recent survey of chief information officers and you could conclude that the letters "CRM" are the Holy Grail for corporations, promising to smooth customer relations and improve the bottom line. If only it were always true.
CRM SPENDING ON THE UPSWING
The worldwide customer relationship management (CRM) services market is expected to rise as much as 15 percent in 2002, according to Dataquest Inc, a unit of Gartner Inc. Spending in the sector has been steadily increasing $19.9 billion in revenue in 2000; $22 billion in 2001, representing a 10.6 percent increase; $25.3 billion forecasted for 2002; and finally reaching $47 billion by 2006.

World No. 2 software maker, Oracle Corp, hit by falling applications sales, showed a newer, softer side to participants at a user conference in San Diego. The Silicon Valley database giant, one of the most aggressive players in the rough-and-tumble sector, invited a customer lobby group to its Oracle AppsWorld U.S. customer conference for the first time, and recently assigned customer advocate duties to one of its key executives.

Hyperion Solutions Corp, Microsoft Corp and SAS Institute Inc announced that SAS has joined Microsoft and Hyperion as a co-chair on the XML for Analysis (XML/A) Council. The XML/A Council was formed in April 2001 to develop and define specifications that enable the easy deployment of sophisticated, analytically rich business intelligence (BI) solutions.
