Business & Money Trail:

HealthScreen AMERICA ANNOUNCES CREATION OF DM SUBSIDIARY

HealthScreen America, a leader in advanced direct-to-consumer health screening, announced the formation of BioQube, a wholly owned subsidiary that will provide researchers access to permission-based comprehensive medical data on pre-symptomatic individuals.

Until now, most medical research and clinical trials have relied on claims driven information from late stage, symptomatic patients. Dr. Eduardo Balbona, HealthScreen's Chief Medical Officer explains, "Diseases actually progress through six stages, developing over years, sometimes decades. Symptoms and treatment don't typically occur until stage 4 or 5: it is only at this point that most medical data is currently gathered."

BioQube will provide access to comprehensive, multi-dimensional data from pre-symptomatic clients, with the ability to cross-reference data against various demographic, geographic, risk factor and biometric information. The result is ad hoc reports generated in real time to help researchers correlate the existence of disease patterns between various risk factors and other variables. Dr. Balbona adds, "Real-time data mining and analysis could offer researchers unprecedented efficiency in delivering pharmaceuticals as well as other medical treatments and services to at-risk consumers."

The data analyzed by BioQube is collected through a proprietary front-end Visual Basic application named Wellness Health Information Profiling System (WHIPS). WHIPS is a patent-pending program developed by HealthScreen America to capture up to 2,900 data points from each client screened. Tests like blood and hormone studies, genetic testing, heart, lung and colon CT scans and various ultrasounds are recorded.

According to Chris Fey, Chairman and CEO of parent company HealthScreen International, "By offering first-of-its-kind access to health data on healthy individuals, BioQube has the potential to revolutionize the way pharmaceutical companies, universities, insurance companies and others involved in healthcare address a population's future health risks."

Use of this data is governed by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines, issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. To this end, HealthScreen obtains four levels of permission from each client allowing the company to 1) perform all health screenings; 2) collect screening data; 3) create a computerized health record; and, 4) inform the client of appropriate clinical trials that might be beneficial. In addition, all client data is released in aggregate form, protecting the identity and privacy of the individual.

Another aspect of the BioQube business model is to provide pharmaceutical and other interested companies a means to market to individuals who, based upon their health risks, would benefit from a particular product or service. BioQube will collect yet another permission level from screening clients to facilitate the marketing program.

Medical & Healthcare Marketplace Guide estimates that the pharmaceutical industry spends more than $35 billion per year in research and development, of which $22 billion is allocated to clinical trial research. "In such a burgeoning industry, we believe that BioQube's data mining capabilities will have a unique ability to benefit research, development and marketing of life-saving medical interventions." Fey added.

BioQube has been funded by parent, HealthScreen International Inc, and its U.S. operating company, HealthScreen America. The company operates state-of-the-art screening centers offering direct access to advanced diagnostic tests that screen for cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and numerous other conditions including genetic diseases. As a result the company is building the largest "permission-based" data warehouse of pre-symptomatic individuals' bioinformatics.
