- THE POTENTIAL FOR FLAWED REASONING IN THE CONTEXT OF DM
by Ed Colet
- Executive Editor-at-Large Inderpal Bhandari presents a guest editorial by
Virtual Gold's Acting Director of Research:
- Interpretation is an important aspect of data mining. The analysis of
large datasets can generate numerous patterns any of which can be
potentially important. A careful interpretation of these results on the part
of the end-user/analyst is often warranted. The process of interpreting
patterns often leads to more questions to ask, and a sequence of follow-up
queries are issued and drill-down reports generated. Thus a chain of
reasoning is built. But just as a chain is only as strong as it's weakest
link, a flawed step in reasoning can adversely affect conclusions that are
drawn and actions that are taken. In this column I look at some errors in
reasoning that people frequently and unknowingly commit and why.
- ENTERPRISE INTEGRATION, DATA FEDERATION, AND THE DKMS
by Joseph M. Firestone, Ph.D.
- In an eloquent article called "United We Stand," Michael Stonebraker
offered a viewpoint on the "islands of information" problem. He defined
Enterprise Integration as "... the ability to read from and write to all
of the applications and data sources across the enterprise." And he
indicated: "Such integration supports unified views of information and lets
you update synchronously across systems." Stonebraker goes on to distinguish
four approaches to the "islands of information" problem: (1) application
integration, an approach he associates with a number of commercial
Enterprise Application Integration packages; (2) data warehousing systems;
(3) messaging systems; and (4) data federation systems.

- ISOLATING B2B INFRASTRUCTURE UNCERTAINTY
by Morgan Gerhart, META Group Inc
- Many infrastructure requirements of system-to-system (S2S)
business-to-business (B2B) e-business will be dictated by business partners
and trading relationships. To ensure overall e-business flexibility,
organizations must, to the greatest extent possible, abstract the
ever-changing S2S infrastructure from the core internal application
infrastructure.

software will make it easier to customize online services to individual
preferences and needs, but some consumer advocates attacked it as a

- WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT ERP?
- Enterprise resource planning software, or ERP, doesn't live up to its
acronym. Forget about planning -- it doesn't do that -- and forget about
resource, a throwaway term. But remember the enterprise part. This is ERP's
true ambition. It attempts to integrate all departments and functions across
a company onto a single computer system that can serve all those different
departments' particular needs.
