DETECTING THE PRESENCE OF FRAUD

Data mining technologies are one of the tools in the arsenal for battling fraud detection. Using data mining software to sift through large amounts of data, the task is to separate legitimate behaviors from fraudulent ones. In many cases and across different domains, the same approach of detecting and analyzing outliers has proved effective. What is more difficult is detecting fraudulent activity that may not be apparent as in the form of outliers. In this column, both approaches are discussed.
 
THE CORPORATE INFORMATION OR KNOWLEDGE FACTORY?

Knowledge is a subset of information. But it is a subset that has been extracted, filtered, or formatted in a very special way. More specifically, the information we call knowledge is information that has been subjected to, and passed tests of validation. Common sense knowledge is information that has been validated by common sense experience. Scientific knowledge is information (hypotheses and theories) validated by the rules and tests applied to it by some scientific community.
