REPRESENTING SUBJECTIVE BELIEFS IN AUTOMATED SYSTEMS

When analyzing data, interesting patterns can result from two basic approaches. One is a deviation from an objectively determined standard. The second is a deviation from a subjectively held belief. Both approaches are valid for finding significant and meaningful trends hidden in data. In this column, I focus on the latter approach and how a Bayesian framework be used to capture subjective beliefs in automated systems for data analysis.
