Irving, Texas -- GTE Corporation's GTE Telephone Operations unit said it has chosen AT&T Network Systems to provide next-generation Asynchronous Transfer Mode switching systems.

AT&T is scheduled to provide it with a dozen GlobeView-2000 Broadband Systems for installation by September. Systems are currently being installed in California, Texas, Oregon, Washington and Florida.

"This roll-out with GTE represents AT&T's largest external customer sale of GlobeView-2000 Broadband Systems," said Harry Bosco, AT&T Network Systems ATM platform vice president.

ATM switching systems are capable of speeding video, voice and data simultaneously through the telephone network at billions of bits per second, making possible communications services such as multimedia, interactive video and medical imaging.

Six GlobeView-2000 ATM systems are scheduled for deployment in California alone, making it one of the largest ATM-based networks in the world.

The ATM system sale represents GTE's fourth major selection of an AT&T product line associated with the construction of its nationwide information superhighway.
